Un encuentro en SL con Julio Cedrus

Julio Cedrus A.K.A Julio Cubillan

Virtual worlds are considered immersive environments, and as such, it’s not unexpected that the element of social presence plays a rather important role. Virtual worlds have an advantage over traditional forms of distance learning in this area, since the avatar is represented by many of the familiar visual and social cues humans are used to. In Aragon (2003), social presence is defined as the “degree of salience of the other person in the interaction and the consequent salience of the interpersonal relationships” (p. 59). Immediacy, or the “measure of psychological distance that a communicator puts between himself or herself and the object of his/her communication,” can be conveyed by physical proximity formality of dress, physical proximity, facial expressions, and other nonverbal cues, as well as verbal (p. 59). This can apply directly to virtual worlds, since players are given control of all these social conveyances, and it is important because it lends to the immersion of the game.

cues  = Señales (s)
salience = Prominencia (s)
conveyed = transmitido (v)

Computational Thinking is a new way of solving problems that gets its name because it uses many of the same techniques used by computer science. The term computational thinking was first used by Seymour Papert in 1996[1]. Computational thinking can be used to algorithmically solve complicated problems of scale. Computational thinking is often used to solve problems of efficiency and to realize large improvements in efficiency through novel approaches to problem solving.
[2] The concept of computational thinking is being spearheaded by the Center of Computational Thinking at Carnegie Mellon where their major activity is conducting PROBEs or PROBlem-oriented Explorations. These PROBEs are experiments that apply novel computing concepts to problems to show the value of computational thinking.

Scalable Game Design is an initiative with the goal to expand opportunities to motivate, engage, and educate students about Computer Science through game design, starting at the middle school level. For over 15 years, funded mainly by the National Science Foundation (NSF), we have carried out investigations on new approaches to programming resulting in game and simulation authoring systems such as AgentSheets [1, 2] and AgentCubes [3]. While the goal has largely remained the same, the degree of ambition has steadily increased, in that we have gradually moved away from communities of self-selected users towards what is
perhaps the most challenging educational context: implementing new IT curricular as part of the regular public school program. The main goal of our latest NSF-funded ITEST project called “Reforming IT Education through Game Design: Integrating
